Indian GM D Gukesh and Chinese star Ding Liren played out an entertaining draw in the second game of the World Chess Championship 2024 final as the chess prodigies shook hands and decided to share the spoils on Tuesday in Singapore.
Holder Liren leads the overall score in the final with 1.5 points to his name at the end of two games in the best-of-14-game series, while Gukesh got off the mark with the draw to notch up 0.5 points.
In sharp contrast to the opening game of the summit clash, which Liren ended up winning following Gukesh’s resignation, the second game was a rather balanced affair on the board.
Gukesh was put under immense pressure from the clock early in the game as he fell nearly 50 minutes behind after seven moves but clawed his way back with a diplomatic approach to the game to earn his first points of the championship clash.
Liren, who did not move from his seat in the first game of the series on Monday, seemed a bit more relaxed on the day as he moved out of his chair frequently, even going to his private lounge between moves.
Following the players’ decision to split the points, they were seen in a conversation pertaining to the possible sequence of moves that could we could have witnessed had the game dragged along.

Liren looked to have a slender advantage following the opening sequence of the game, but Gukesh clawed his way back into the game to neutralise the threat and pull himself up back into the game.
Liren, boosted by the opening day victory with black pieces, seemed way more settled and composed playing with white pieces on the day as he took the initiative in piling pressure on the Indian teenager.
Gukesh, however, found a good formation midway through the 23-move game to navigate a way out of the trap and pressure Liren was posing to unleash.
