District Commissioner of Nalbari Varnali Deka made headlines after a court ordered to register an FIR against her for harassing her subordinate officers. Aparna Sarma, a female Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer holding the position of Circle Officer (CO) in West Nalbari Revenue Circle accused the IAS officer of mentally harassing her during the Lok Sabha elections. After completing her graduation studies she decided to sit for the civil services examination. She reportedly cleared the examination two times. In the first attempt, she managed to secure an IPS rank. However, she was not happy with the outcome. In her second attempt in 2009, she secured an IAS rank.

IAS Varnali Deka is from Guwahati. According to media reports, the IAS officer was born on February 15, 1979. According to a report published in Times of India in 2009, Varnali Deka completed her B.Tech in Bangalore and pursued an MBA from IIT Bombay after which she started the preparation of Civil services. The 2009 batch IAS officer holds a B.Tech in Computer Science.

Varnali Deka first cleared the country’s toughest examination in the year 2008, after which she was selected as an IPS officer. In an interview with the Times of India, Varnali Deka shared that from a very young age, she dreams of becoming an IAS officer. However, on the first try, she was selected as an IPS cadre. The following year, she appeared for the examination again, securing an All-India rank of 16, and joined an IAS officer.

After the court ordered to file an FIR against the officer, it was known that Aparna Sarma filed a complaint at the Nalbari Sadar police station. The officer mentioned that the UPSC officer suffered severe mental distress on January 24, 2024, following an incident related to the procurement of some things for freedom fighters. The tussle escalated on May 7, 2024, when DC Varnali Deka humiliated Aparna Sarma, using derogatory language while she was on polling duty in Nalbari town. The IAS officer’s behavioural aspect will be not scrutinised carefully by the higher officials.
