Donatella Versace is stepping down as creative director of the iconic Italian luxury house to take on a new role as chief brand ambassador. The big role shake-up was announced on Thursday by Versace’s US owner, Capri Holdings. Replacing Donatella is Dario Vitale, the former head of design and image at Miu Miu, which is part of the Prada Group. Vitale will officially step into his new role in April 2025, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Who is Dario Vitale?
Born in 1983 near Naples, Dario Vitale got his start in fashion after graduating in 2006 from Istituto Marangoni. He spent a brief time at Dsquared2 before kicking off his career at the Italian luxury house Bottega Veneta. By July 10, he made a major move to Miu Miu, where he climbed the ranks from fashion designer to design director for ready-to-wear. In a very short time, he took over the role of brand image design director. According to Vogue, Vitale was credited with Miu Miu’s massive transformation, turning it into one of the most sought-after brands in the industry. His creative vision paid off; reports say sales skyrocketed by 93% in 2024 alone.
Versace welcomed Dario Vitale with open arms, praising his appointment in a statement that read, “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me.” In his own message on Instagram, Vitale shared, “I am truly honoured to join Versace as Chief Creative Officer and to be part of this iconic and powerful fashion house created by Gianni and Donatella.”
He went on to thank Donatella for putting her trust in him, “I want to express my sincere thank you to Donatella for her trust in me, and for her tireless dedication to the extraordinary brand that Versace is today. It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication.”
What’s next for Donatella Versace?
Donatella Versace, the younger sister of Gianni Versace, took charge of the iconic fashion house back in 1997 after her brother’s tragic murder in Miami. Over the years, she turned the brand into a symbol of fearless, unapologetic power, pretty much everything she stands for. But as Donatella steps down as creative director, the rumours are rife. Word is, Prada Group might be looking to snap up Versace from its current owner, Capri Holdings. According to the Hollywood Reporter, this same group also owns Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. While Miuccia Prada dropped a hint about being interested during Milan Fashion Week last month, Donatella stayed silent, even as she closed what could be her final runway show. But now, Vitale’s arrival at the luxury fashion house only makes this whole thing even more interesting.
Speaking about her new role in the house, Donatella in a statement said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope to have some of his spirit and tenacity.” She continued, “In my new role as chief brand ambassador, I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.’’
