What is a mono diet?

“If you can handle it, a three-day mono diet of grapes could truly be transformative to your body!” says digital creator Chynthia Bromley.

According to her, grapes are the ultimate lymphatic cleanser and a “mono diet of grapes can promote lymphatic flow which will pull toxins from your body, aid weight loss, improve cognitive function, decrease inflammation, increase energy, boost your mood.”

But what exactly is a mono diet?

Gut health nutritionist Payal Kothari explained that a mono diet includes eating only one food for 24 to 72 hours, a philosophy based on the minimalist way of living and eating.

“This diet is based on the idea that simplifying food combinations can ease the digestive process, allowing the body to break down and absorb nutrients efficiently. By eating just one food type, the digestive system isn’t overburdened with complex combinations, which can sometimes lead to bloating, indigestion, or other digestive discomforts,” Kothari told indianexpress.com.

Veena V, Chief Clinical Dietician at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, explained that the lymphatic system drains waste products from tissues to the blood for elimination in a process called lymphatic drainage. “It also collects fat and fat-soluble nutrients from our intestines, drains fluid from bodily tissues back to the heart, and traps debris like toxins and infectious agents and sends them for removal,” she said.

“A 3-day grape mono diet is one where you only consume grapes for all meals. It is a restrictive diet with short-term advantages like hydration, mild detoxing that can aid in lymphatic drainage, and a break from processed foods,” said Veena.

However, while grapes contain antioxidants, vitamins, and natural sugars that provide energy and help with digestion, she explained that a diet like this is deficient in many necessary nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and some minerals, resulting in fatigue, muscle loss, or blood sugar imbalance.

“This can cause an imbalance in blood sugar levels, which can become dangerous, especially for diabetics or insulin-resistant individuals. Consuming only grapes can also lead to digestive discomfort, bloating, or diarrhea,” said Veena, adding that it is safe for healthy people to practice this for a short while, but it is not a healthy or balanced means of eating.
