The all-electric Volvo ES90 was unveiled today. This electric sibling of the S90 sedan is Volvo’s most technologically advanced car and will serve as a premium flagship for the Swedish automaker’s EV lineup.

- Rivals Tesla Model S and Mercedes EQE sedan
Volvo ES90 range, battery and platform

700km max range; 106kWh battery
Built on the modular SPA2 platform, the electric ES90 is the second car to use the EV-only architecture after the flagship Volvo EX90 SUV. However, the electric sedan takes it a notch up with an 800V electrical system, making it compatible with up to 350kW charging speeds. As a result, a 300km range top-up can be achieved in 10 minutes of fast charging. On a full single charge, the ES90 delivers a range of about 700 kilometres (on the WLTP cycle) from its 106kWh battery pack. The power and torque specs of the ES90’s electric motors were not disclosed by the brand.
Volvo ES90 exterior design

Side profile mostly resembles the plug-in hybrid S90
Most of the styling cues come from the EX90, including the ‘Thor’ hammer LED headlights, a closed-off grille, and C-shaped tail lamps. A lidar hump on the front side of the roof was also seen during the unveiling, a feature that we have seen with some Lotus and Xiaomi cars. Save for the aero-optimised fastback design, the side profile resembles the plug-in hybrid S90 sold in international markets. Volvo will offer the ES90 with seven exterior colours and wheel options that vary from 20 to 22 inch in size.
Volvo ES90 interior and features

14.5-inch touchscreen is placed in portrait orientation
Its portrait-styled 14.5-inch touchscreen display gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with 5G connectivity and over-the-air (OTA) software updates support. Other notable features include a 9-inch digital driver’s display, electrochromic sunroof with UV protection, 25-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos, ambient lights (six colours), 360-degree camera setup and PM2.5 air purifier. The 424-litre (with all seats up) boot capacity can be expanded to 733 litre with the rear seats folded down.
Volvo ES90 safety tech

Gets 12 ultrasonic sensors and seven cameras
The ES90 SDV (software-defined vehicle) packs an array of active safety features like five radars, seven cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors and a lidar sensor. “Safety is further enhanced via data, software and artificial intelligence,” said Anders Bell, Volvo’s chief technology and engineering officer.
Volvo ES90 India launch, rivals
Orders accepted in some markets
Competes with Tesla Model S and Mercedes EQE sedan
The new Volvo ES90 is available for order now in countries like Germany, United Kingdom, France and Czech Republic; other markets will be added later this year and into 2026. Volvo did not disclose details on the India launch of the ES90 BEV. If brought here, the Volvo sedan will rival the BMW i5, which offers a 516km range and has a Rs 1.20 crore price (ex-showroom).
