The UPSC Civil Services Mains Exam 2024 commenced today with the Paper-I Essay exam on Friday. UPS Mains exams are scheduled to take place from September 20, 21, 22 and September 28 and 29. The exam will be conducted over five days in two shifts per day. It comprises nine descriptive papers, including compulsory language papers, general studies papers, an essay paper and optional subject papers.

Candidates who have passed the prelim examination will be able to sit for this examination.

In preparation for the UPSC Mains Exam, it’s essential to ensure you have everything in order well before the exam day.

First and foremost, download and print your admit card from the official UPSC website as soon as it becomes available. This is your entry pass to the examination centre and no candidate will be allowed inside without it. Double-check that all the details on the admit card, such as your roll number, exam venue and timings, are correct.

Organise your travel and plan to arrive at the centre at least 30-45 minutes early to avoid any last-minute delays due to traffic or unforeseen circumstances. It’s crucial to be relaxed and composed as you approach the venue.

On exam day, make sure you carry the necessary ID proof, such as your Aadhaar card, passport, or PAN card, along with your admit card. Keep these documents in a secure folder. Pack at least two black ballpoint pens, as these are mandatory for writing the exam. Having spare pens ensures you won’t face issues like ink running out during the test.

It’s important to dress appropriately and comfortably for the exam. Wear simple clothing that adheres to any specific dress codes laid out by the UPSC. Avoid wearing accessories, such as jewellery or electronic gadgets, as these are not allowed in the exam hall.

Mentally prepare yourself by revising your notes the day before and ensuring you have a calm mindset. Get a good night’s sleep before the exam and eat a light meal to avoid feeling sluggish or too full on the exam day. It’s always helpful to stay positive and confident, knowing that thorough preparation will pay off.

Attempt all questions even if you feel that the answer is incorrect. Partial marks will be awarded for attempting the question.

UPSC Exam Hall Strategies

Know the total number of questions and marks for each question. Divide your time accordingly, ensuring that you leave time for revision. Don’t spend too much time on any one question.

Focus on what is being asked. Don’t jump to answering without fully understanding the demands of the question. Do not leave any question unattempted, even when you are not sure of the answer.

Keep on revising the answer. Reserve the last 10-15 minutes of the exam to quickly review your answers, correct any mistakes and ensure you haven’t missed any questions. Do not panic. It is natural to feel nervous during such difficult examinations. Focus on whatever you know and work hard on it.

By maintaining a balance between speed and clarity, you can ensure that your answers are both comprehensive and well-structured, maximising your chances of scoring higher in the exam. Keep your calm and focus on how well you can write.
