While it is not advised to shampoo your hair every day, sometimes the dirt and grease make it absolutely impossible to go out without washing your hair. Your favorite skincare product, micellar water could be the answer to all your problems.
Micellar water is a mild skin cleanser made with micelles, which are small clusters of molecules. These micelles attach to oil, helping to remove makeup and impurities while hydrating the skin. Micellar water provides a convenient method to cleanse the skin without washing or scrubbing the face.

But how can this skin cleanser also be used as a dry shampoo? Similar to how it cleans the face, the micelles present in it attract and dissolve impurities without stripping the hair of its natural oils. It helps to refresh the scalp and hair without leaving residue or buildup.
“It is a gentle and effective way to cleanse hair, especially for those with sensitive scalps or those looking for a more environmentally friendly option. While it may not replace traditional shampoo entirely, it serves as a valuable addition to a hair care routine,” said Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant – Dermatology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai.
How to use it?
“To use micellar water as a dry shampoo, apply it to a cotton pad and gently dab it on the oily areas of the scalp. This method can help absorb excess oil and leave the hair feeling clean and light.” said Dr Kohli. However it is to be noted that while micellar water is excellent for light cleansing, it may not be as effective at removing heavy oils and dirt from the scalp and hair.
What are the benefits of using micellar water as a dry shampoo?
Dr Kohli told us the following benefits of micellar water for hair:
-Gentle Cleansing: Micellar water is known for its mild surfactant properties, making it suitable for sensitive scalps. It effectively removes product buildup and refreshes hair between washes.

-Non-Dehydrating: Unlike some traditional shampoos, micellar water does not strip the hair of its natural oils, maintaining hydration and manageability.
-Versatility: It can be used on all hair types, including thin, oily, or curly hair, to add volume and remove excess oil.
-Environmentally Friendly: Micellar water is a more sustainable option compared to conventional shampoos, as it often requires less water.
