Many students dream of clearing the Common Admission Test (CAT) and securing admission into an IIM college. IIT-Delhi’s final-year B.Tech (Chemical Engineering) student Vagish Bhushan Nangia has achieved a 100 percentile in CAT 2024 on his very first attempt. Despite a demanding academic schedule, placement preparations, and extracurricular activities, he managed to achieve a scaled score of 164.44 out of 204.

Preparation Started in July

According to Vagish, balancing college studies, extracurricular activities, placement preparation, and B.Tech coursework was not easy. He began his CAT 2024 preparation at the end of July, focusing on understanding the exam pattern and taking a few mock tests. Vagish followed a structured schedule, dedicating short practice sessions of 15 to 30 minutes.

He shared that while reading lengthy passages and articles, he made concise notes. He also utilised an Unacademy subscription, which provided access to live classes, doubt-solving sessions, and curated test series.

Vagish says he developed time management skills through consistent practice, which helped him stay calm under pressure. Regular mock tests enabled him to maintain a steady flow and improve his efficiency.

To prepare effectively, he solved numerous past CAT papers. This not only helped him understand the exam pattern but also allowed him to evaluate his performance more accurately.

Advice For CAT Aspirants

Vagish advises CAT aspirants to assess their comfort level with the exam in advance and prepare accordingly. For some, the exam might feel manageable, while others may need to dedicate more time and effort. The key, he says, is to cover the entire syllabus, practise a variety of question types, and regularly take time-bound mock tests.
