The much-awaited show, The Roshans, was released today on Netflix. As the title suggests, it’s about the Roshan family and their immense contribution to cinema. One of the most entertaining parts of the documentary is the madness that ensued during the making of Rakesh Roshan’s blockbuster Karan Arjun (1995).
The Roshans: Shah Rukh Khan reveals he and Salman Khan TROUBLED Rakesh Roshan immensely on the sets of Karan Arjun: “Pinkie ji SCOLDED me saying, ‘I didn’t expect this from you’. I replied, ‘I didn’t do anything. It’s all Salman’s doing’”
Shah Rukh Khan began by saying, “Karan Arjun ki jo casting ki kahani hai, woh Karan Arjun ki kahani se bhi zyada interesting hai! Rakesh ji told me about the first scene of the film – the two brothers are born; they hold hands, and they look at each other. I thought Rakesh ji was joking (smiles). I told him, ‘Aisa thodi na hota hai. Chhote bacche thodi na haath pakad lenge’! But he was serious. He said, ‘Uss scene pe likha hua aayega film ka naam’. From that day, mujhe film samaj nahin aayi.”
He continued, “I told him, ‘Count me in. I can do action and stunts. But I don’t know how to do this film. You tell me how to do’. He informed me, ‘You and Ajay Devgn are doing the film’. Meri yeh bahut tamanna thi ki main action hero banu. But no one ever offered me an action hero before. I told Rakesh ji, ‘You are giving the action role to Ajay, and I am once again given a romantic hero. Main gulel se maar raha hoon aur woh bandook se. I want his role’.”
Rakesh Roshan explained why he didn’t give in to SRK’s demand saying, “Karan is an action hero while Arjun is a romantic hero. If I had changed the roles, it would have resulted in a miscast. Both said, ‘We want to change our image’. I replied, ‘Woh aap dusri picture mein kar lijiye! This film requires you to be the same, what you both are’.”
Shah Rukh continued, “I went to Rakesh ji and complained, ‘I can’t even ride a horse. Kahan main ghode pe gulel chalaunga? Mujhse yeh nahin hoga. Please give me the other role. Main zameen ka seena faad ke aa jaunga aur fight kar lunga’. But he maintained, ‘Ajay is the action hero’.”
This is when both Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan backed out of Karan Arjun. Rakesh Roshan stated, “Salman heard the story and immediately agreed to do it. Even Aamir agreed.” This is when Shah Rukh Khan came back to the film. He revealed, “I told Rakesh ji, ‘Nahin nahin, aap mujhe hi lo, please. Please don’t confuse me anymore’.”
However, trouble continued during the shoot of the film. Rakesh Roshan exulted, “Salman told me, ‘Aap bole ki aap bahut badi picture banayenge. But you brought us here in a village in Rajasthan. I had some other imagination’. I answered, ‘Salman, you are an actor. You don’t have to imagine where I’ll make the film’. As a result, they started losing interest in the film. The shot is ready and it’s sunset time. They wouldn’t turn up when we called them. They’d come at the last moment, and we had to rush through the shot.”
Shah Rukh Khan confessed, “Yes, we harassed him a lot because both of us were naughty and troublemakers. Pinkie ji scolded me a lot saying, ‘You’re troubling Guddu a lot. I didn’t expect this from you’. Between Salman and me, main thoda shareef tha. At least on the face of it! I replied, ‘I didn’t do anything. It’s all his doing’. So, we were two young kids, troubling a father figure.”
Shah Rukh Khan then got the shock of his life when he went to a cinema hall to check the audience’s reaction to Karan Arjun, “People were clapping, whistling and shouting. I was wondering, ‘Isme kya pasand aa raha hai logon ko?’. People started screaming from the shot of babies holding hands and it continued until the end. I went out and touched Rakesh ji’s feet. I said, ‘I am sorry, I didn’t understand the film’. He told me, ‘Ab samjha?’!”
