The Evolving Hiring Process – HigherEdJobs Podcast Recap

by Monika Sziron, Ph.D.

In the inaugural episode of the HigherEdJobs Podcast, Andy and Kelly interview Christopher D. Lee, the chief human resources officer at the college of William & Mary and author of “Search Committees: A Comprehensive Guide to Successful Faculty, Staff, and Administrative Searches.”

Dr. Lee shares his wisdom from many years of HR leadership. He shares how the search committee, selection process, and hiring process have changed over time. His advice is pointed at current search committees and HR managers facing new challenges in recruiting and maintaining a new dynamic workforce — a workforce that is hybrid and seeking more flexibility than previous workforces.

Dr. Lee also advocates for integrated diversity initiatives. When it comes to diversity in the search and selection process, Lee states, “…it has to be woven into the whole process of how you think about who you bring on. And so if it is integrated, then you’ll be successful. If it’s an add on, it will be perceived to be a hassle or something additional or discretionary.”
