Schools in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana will be closed today for the Shab-e-Meraj festival.
Schools in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana will remain closed on Tuesday, January 28, for the Shab-e-Meraj festival. Since it is an optional holiday, not all educational institutions will remain closed. According to the Telangana government’s official 2025 calendar, January 28 is marked as an optional holiday for Shab-e-Meraj rather than a general holiday. This allows individual schools and institutions to decide whether to remain open or closed, resulting in variations across the state.
Shab-e-Meraj is a significant occasion for Muslims, marking the night Prophet Muhammad travelled from Makkah to Jerusalem and ascended to heaven, receiving guidance from Allah and meeting other prophets. While many schools are likely to stay shut, some may choose to hold regular classes.
Students should note that Telangana has declared six holidays in January—four regular holidays and two optional ones, including this one.
Varanasi Schools Closed Till Feb 5 Due To Maha Kumbh
Due to the increasing number of devotees traveling from Prayagraj’s Maha Kumbh to Varanasi, the District Magistrate of Varanasi has ordered the closure of all schools in the district from January 27 to February 5, 2025. However, online classes will be conducted during regular school hours to keep the syllabus on track. This directive is applicable to all CBSE, ICSE, and state board schools in the district. Board practical exams, if scheduled, will proceed without disruption. The decision aims to manage the challenges of large crowds and potential traffic issues, prioritising student safety and maintaining order in the city.

The District Basic Education Officer Arvind Pathak, in an official notice, stated: “Given the current situation in the district, particularly in urban areas, where a large number of pilgrims and devotees are expected to arrive, all government, aided, CBSE, and ICSE schools offering classes from Grade 1 to 12 are instructed to switch to online learning from January 27 to February 5, 2025. Moreover, if any practical exams for CBSE, UP Board, or other boards are scheduled during this time, they should be conducted seamlessly without disruption.”
