Tata Motors retakes second spot in retail sales from Hyundai, Mahindra

Tata Motors was India’s second highest-selling carmaker in March 2025, beating out Mahindra and Hyundai. The past seven months saw Tata mostly relegated to the third (and sometimes fourth) position, but with 48,462 cars last month, the manufacturer has reclaimed the second spot in the retail sales rankings.

  1. Tata records 5 percent year-on-year sales increase in March 2025
  2. Mahindra saw 17 percent higher sales, while Hyundai sales dropped 5 percent
  3. Market share decreased year-on-year for Tata and Hyundai, but grew for Mahindra

In March, Tata’s sales volumes increased by 5 percent year-on-year. However, the company’s market share stood at 13.8 percent, marking a 0.3 percent decline year-on-year.

Third place in the charts was taken up by Mahindra, which recorded sales of 46,297 cars and a market share of 13.20 percent, up 17 percent and 1.17 percent year-on-year respectively. Slotting in at fourth was Hyundai with 42,511 cars sold, down 5 percent year-on-year. Similarly, Hyundai’s market share in March 2025 dropped to 12.13 percent from 13.50 percent.

Hyundai’s longstanding second place dominance disrupted

Hyundai long held second position in the monthly sales rankings, but this pattern gave way in recent months. Mahindra outsold Hyundai in February 2025 and occupied second place, and Tata ended up overtaking both of them in March.

The exact reasons are unclear, but it’s likely that Mahindra’s popular SUV lineup, including the Scorpio N, Bolero, Thar, and XUV700, and Tata’s numerous EV offerings helped both companies get the jump on Hyundai. Curiously, the Korean carmaker launched the Creta Electric in January, but still slipped in the sales charts in subsequent months.

Overall, the domestic car market recorded cumulative retail sales of 350,603 units in March 2025, marking year-on-year growth of 6.27 percent.
