Not only is November 11 Veterans Day, but the entire month of November is Military Family Appreciation Month. This month, we not only want to recognize the sacrifices of our veterans and service members but also the unique sacrifices and challenges family members of veterans and service members face supporting their loved ones in uniform.

We also want to thank those working in the nonprofit sector for their dedication and steadfastness in supporting our veterans, service members, and their families.

A Veterans Day gift to support the organizations that serve veterans and military-connected communities is an excellent way to honor those who served. With this in mind, HigherEdJobs, HigherEdMilitary, and my family will all be donating to the following organizations (with a description of each in their own words) in honor of Veterans Day:

Blue Star Families: “We’re committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with their neighbors – individuals and organizations – to create vibrant communities of mutual support. We believe we’re all stronger when we take care of one another. Our groundbreaking research is raising the nation’s awareness of the unique challenges of military family life. With the help of neighbors across the country, Blue Star Families is overcoming the isolation and alienation of frequent moves, deployments, and reduced support from the government.”

National Military Family Association: “Our Association is the ‘go to’ source for Administration Officials, Members of Congress, and key decision makers when they want to understand the issues facing our families. They know we have ‘boots on the ground’ with military families and understand better than anyone that ‘military families serve, too.’ Through the support and programs we provide, and our respected voice on Capitol Hill and with the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, our Association always looks out for the families who stand behind the uniform and for those who serve.”

Pat Tillman Foundation: “Our mission is to unite and empower remarkable military service members, veterans and spouses as the next generation of public and private sector leaders committed to service beyond self.”

Student Veterans of America: “Student Veterans of America (SVA) elevates the academic, professional, and personal development of veterans in higher education through chapter programs and services, outcomes and impacts research, and advocacy at every level. With a mission focused on empowering student veterans, SVA is committed to providing an educational experience that goes beyond the classroom.”

Warrior Scholar Project: “In partnership with top colleges and universities, Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) hosts intensive, one and two-week college-preparatory academic boot camps for enlisted veterans and transitioning service members. Boot camps are offered in three disciplines: Humanities, STEM, and Business & Entrepreneurship.”

We understand that giving is very personal and respect the individual choice to support a charity. There are many other organizations serving veterans and the military-connected community, we encourage you to not only visit their websites to learn more, but also review the operations of their organization at sites like GuideStar or Charity Navigator.
