Screenwriter Niren Bhatt, known for Stree 2, Munjya, and Bhediya, believes originality is key to standing out in an era of endless content.
Stree 2 writer Niren Bhatt calls for disruption in Hindi cinema’s writing space: “The entire system is broken”
Bhatt, who has been the chief writing architect of Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, says there is a crisis that has gripped the writing community of the Hindi film industry.
While one reality is “bleak”, the other, equally true reflection, is that “disruptors” in the space will be rewarded, Bhatt said at the 7th edition of the Indian Screenwriters Conference (ISC) hosted by the Screenwriters Association of India (SWA) on Friday.
Niren said, “There are two pictures– One is very bleak; all writers are struggling; this is the worst time for writers in the industry but then it’s up to you how to navigate. I think this is also the best time because all the established rules are broken. The entire system is broken. So only disruptors will survive and writers are the biggest disruptors. People who are sticking to their guns, their films aren’t working. It is the best time for disruption.”
At the session The Mainstream Reality, Niren Bhatt was joined by Pathaan dialogue writer Abbas Tyrewala, writer Kanika Dhillon, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 writer Aakash Kaushik. The discussion was moderated by Hitesh Kewalya, writer of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.
Talking about the importance of original storytelling, Bhatt also noted Bollywood’s current obsession with remakes and added how most of them have tanked at the box office, signalling a huge shift.
“Out of 25 remakes post-pandemic, 23 are flops. The only way to succeed is to make original content,” Bhatt added.
Niren Bhatt, part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, is working on Thama (starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna), Stree 3, and Bhediya 2 (starring Varun Dhawan). He believes that when a writer finds their voice, they can naturally extend a franchise’s lifespan.
“It is a dream for all writers to have a universe,” he added.
At the ISC, concluding on Sunday, screenwriters and creators like Kiran Rao, Shoojit Sircar, Nikkhil Advani, Dibakar Banerjee, Biswapati Sarkar, and Anand Tiwari will discuss their experiences, techniques, and the evolving dynamics of the industry’s New Reality.
