Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka stated that the State government had plans to develop at least 20,000 MW of green energy capacity both within the State and in other States (in the form of joint ventures).

Of it, the government was planning to develop about 1,000 MW with women self-help-groups (SHGs) and also solar energisation of some villages on a pilot basis by setting up roof-top solar panels on all households running agricultural pumpsets with standalone solar power units, he said.

However, Mr. Vikramarka said that recommendations compiled after the consultations held with the stakeholders and broad ideas of the Energy department would be placed before the State Cabinet meeting slated for Saturday in the form of a draft green energy policy so that a decision could be taken on the formulation of the new policy.

The Cabinet would discuss the draft and give its nod along with suggestions, if any, to pave the way for formulating the new clean and green policy and unveiling it very soon, Mr. Vikramarka, who also holds the portfolios of Energy and Finance, said while speaking to newspersons after participating in the consultation with stakeholders.

The new policy would be the best one to attract investments in the renewable energy sector by offering incentives in different forms and providing an investor-friendly ecosystem and the main objective would be to make Telangana a power/energy surplus State through sustainable energy generation such as solar with battery storage facility, wind, biomass, pumped storage hydel and hydrogen.

He stated that the peak demand of power recorded in the State so far was 15,623 megawatts and it was estimated to reach 24,215 MW by 2029-30 and 31,809 MW by 2023-35. The demand would be driven by the development of future city, expansion of metro rail, pharma city and industrial clusters along the Regional Ring Road.

The transmission and distribution network too would be strengthened to match the demand by pumping investments in infrastructure development. Replying to a question on energy purchases, Principal Secretary (Energy) Sandeep Kumar Sultania said about 15%-18% was being procured from the energy exchange depending on the demand.
