Nagpur: The Transit Treatment Centre, the nation’s first such facility, has rehabilitated five birds in the past week after they fell victim to lethal chinese thread or nylon manja used in kite flying.
Kundan Hate, honorary wildlife warden, TTC, said that three barn owls, a pigeon and a laughing dove were brought in with injuries to their wings from various parts of the city. All these birds have been treated, and returned and released at their original rescue locations.
Hate mentioned the situation remains better than last year, whereas before 2023 the number of manja casualties were substantially higher.
Hate commended the awareness initiatives by society members, NGOs and nature enthusiasts.
The lethal threads, despite being prohibited, remain accessible through illicit channels. The manja has proven hazardous not only to birds but to humans as well.
