School Holiday Announced In Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada Due to Heavy Rain as IMD Issues Red Alert

Schools and Colleges in Dakshina Kannada district are closed today due to heavy rains as IMD has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka on June 27. Kannada District Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan had issued an order that mentions the closure of Anganwadis, government aided and primary high schools.
“A holiday has been declared in all schools in Mangaluru on June 27 as heavy rain continued in the district.A red alert has been declared in the district tomorrow. Fishermen have been instructed to not venture into fishing. Public has been suggested to go to the seashore, or river bank,” reads the official order by the Deputy Commissioner.
Karnataka rainfall: Latest updates
According to the latest updates from the IMD, the Karnataka coast is expected to experience turbulent weather with winds blowing at speeds between 35 kmph and 45 kmph, potentially reaching up to 55 kmph in gusts. The IMD has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rains along with winds of 30/40 km/h in coastal Karnataka on Thursday. The rainfall is expected to continue in the coastal district from June 28 to June 30.
Advisory for the general public
Apart from closure of schools, the district administration has issued various precautionary measures as the district is experiencing heavy rainfall after the arrival of the monsoon. Several areas prone to landslides have been identified and precautionary measures have been implemented to mitigate risks. Fishermen have been advised to not venture into the sea for fishing activities. Public has been urged to not go to the seashore, rivers and low lying areas. School may switch to online mode for classes, if conditions worsened.
