Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim called on his players to change INEOS boss Jim Ratcliffe’s mind about the side that has been incredibly underwhelming in the ongoing season under the Portuguese gaffer. Ratcliffe did not hold back in his reflections on the Mancunian side as he called out the sub-par showings of the team that is languishing in the 14th place of the English top flight.

Amorim put his hand up and took responsibility for the state the club finds itself in as Ratcliffe took the names of players, including Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana, who have been largely unimpressive for the Red Devils and loaned out Anthony and Jadon Sancho, for the ‘inherited’ issues the club need to deal with.

United are slated to take on Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League Ro16 second leg, and Amorim rallied his players to rise to the occasion and pull through in the continental competition. The 40-year-old stated that results were the only way to turn perceptions around and reiterated that his players were still hungry for victory on the training ground and it is a matter of translating the same on matchday.

“I think if we are being honest in this moment everybody — me, all the players — are underperforming this season so we can always change that,” the United boss began.

“So, I include myself in that part of under-performing. You are talking about players like Casemiro, for example, that won everything, and we know that these kind of players can play so much better, so that is the focus,” he said.

“Ratcliffe was honest in that, so the focus is to change his mind and to change all the people’s minds,” Amotim said.

“If you are a top player and you play in this football club and even me – a lot of people say I am not good enough for the club and my feeling is you can change that with results,” the Portuguese boss said.

“In training, I feel they want that really bad, especially tomorrow,” Amorim reiterated.

The UEL represents the only plausible pathway for United to get into the superior UEFA Champions League next season with the winner of the UEL granted a spot in the premier competition the following year.

“In that context it’s also important to give us more energy to continue the season,” he said.

“We know that it’s not going to change a lot the idea for the next season, but it gives us more energy to finish the season in a different way,” the United boss said.

“Tomorrow, again, is going to be really important game for us,” he signed off.
