In an era marked by rapid globalisation, technological disruption, and shifting job paradigms, India stands at a critical juncture. With over 35 million Indians living abroad as of 2024—the largest diaspora in the world—there is no denying that Indian talent has carved a significant place on the world stage. Yet, for India’s youth to truly harness global opportunities, certain essential skills must be cultivated with intention and foresight.
An inspiring leader born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu now heads one of the world’s most powerful tech companies (Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google & Alphabet), steering innovation that shapes billions of lives daily. Another, who once walked the corridors of a public school in Hyderabad, leads a global software giant (Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft) and champions the future of AI and cloud computing. Across boardrooms, laboratories, and campuses worldwide, Indian-origin professionals are leading change, driving billion-dollar strategies, and setting new benchmarks. Their journeys signal a powerful truth: global success is no longer defined by where you come from, but by the skills you bring to the table.
The Power Of Communication In A Global Workforce
“According to the 2022 QS Global Employer Survey, which gathered insights from over 26,000 employers across the world, ‘Communication’ was rated the highest among 15 skills considered to be the most important when hiring new graduates,” says Amit Baveja, Managing Director of Burlington English India & Southeast Asia.
This insight reflects a universal truth—strong communication skills are the bedrock of professional success, often surpassing even technical know-how. Across industries like technology, healthcare, engineering, and finance, the ability to clearly express ideas, understand cultural nuances, and collaborate across diverse environments remains paramount.
He further added, “This underscores the fact that proficiency in English has become a critical skill in today’s interconnected world, enabling individuals to thrive in global work environments and communicate across cultures.” English fluency, he notes, is not merely a classroom subject but an essential life skill. From excelling in international boardrooms to navigating multicultural client interactions, the ability to articulate thoughts effectively in English can significantly elevate one’s career trajectory.
Importantly, Baveja underscores that “Exposure to English is not about memorisation—it is a continuous, immersive process.” In today’s digital age, learning tools offer dynamic and personalised experiences, enabling learners to build industry-specific fluency at their own pace. Whether it’s mastering healthcare communication or engineering jargon, fluency can transform job-readiness into career excellence. As Baveja concludes, “Fluency in English is more than just a marker of academic success—it is a passport to a thriving, global career.”
Embracing Future-Ready Capabilities
While communication remains foundational, the accelerating pace of technological innovation demands that professionals also master new-age competencies. Mr. Anish Srikrishna, CEO of TimesPro, aptly points out, “At TimesPro, we recognise that the dynamic nature of the global job market demands a proactive approach to professional development.”
He highlights how technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics are not just changing existing roles but are also birthing new ones. To stay relevant, professionals must cultivate a culture of continuous learning. “By adopting a culture of lifelong learning and building these in-demand capabilities, we can strengthen employability and empower Indian talent to play a leading role in the country’s growth journey,” says Srikrishna.
Furthermore, he stresses that as automation redefines job functions, professionals need to “move beyond conventional knowledge, embracing emerging skills such as data literacy, digital fluency, strategic thinking and emotional intelligence.” In this rapidly evolving ecosystem, reskilling is not optional—it is a strategic necessity.
Global Certifications: Validating Excellence
In addition to soft and digital skills, internationally recognized certifications provide a crucial edge in today’s competitive job market. Mr. Sripal Jain, Co-Founder, Simandhar Education, emphasises, “In today’s interconnected world, internationally recognized certifications such as CPA, CMA, ACCA, CFA, and IFRS are essential for enhancing employability, as they provide professionals with the technical expertise needed by global employers. These qualifications not only align professionals with evolving industry standards but also serve as a gateway to diverse career opportunities across borders.”
With over 669,000 CPAs in the U.S. alone and numerous mutual recognition agreements between countries, such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, these qualifications offer unmatched mobility and career progression. Furthermore, the growing demand for skilled professionals in Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and multinational companies highlights the increasing importance of such certifications. Reports indicate that GCCs in India, which currently employ over 1.6 million professionals, are projected to expand to over 2 million by 2030, with finance and accounting being a key domain driving this growth.
The India Skills Report 2025 highlights that the employability rate among Indian graduates has reached 54.81%, up from 51.25% in 2024, indicating a positive trend in skill development. However, it also points out that 42.6% of Indian graduates applying for jobs are considered overall employable, underscoring the need for industry-recognized certifications to bridge this gap.
“As the global economy shifts towards digital transformation and sustainability, these certifications provide professionals with a distinct competitive edge. Industries such as AI, fintech, and renewable energy are rapidly expanding, and employers are increasingly seeking candidates who are equipped with both technical expertise and the ability to innovate,” says Mr. Jain.
Cross-Cultural Competence: Navigating Diversity with Ease
In a globalised workplace, the ability to work effectively with individuals from different cultural backgrounds is no longer optional—it’s essential. Cross-cultural competence involves understanding, respecting, and adapting to diverse perspectives and work styles. Whether it’s managing multicultural teams, working across time zones, or communicating with international clients, this skill enhances collaboration and builds trust.
As Amit Baveja, Managing Director at Burlington English India & Southeast Asia, explains, “The ability to articulate thoughts clearly, understand nuances, and adapt to diverse professional settings is fundamental to success.” In multicultural work environments, this adaptability not only improves communication but also helps professionals avoid misunderstandings and build stronger relationships. With India’s expansive global diaspora, fostering cross-cultural awareness among students and professionals alike becomes a strategic imperative for long-term career growth.
India’s youth have unparalleled potential to lead on a global scale. To do so, they must take a comprehensive approach to skill development that includes strong communication, future-ready technical expertise, cross-cultural competence, collaboration, and globally validated credentials.
The road to global success is not defined by a single skill or qualification. It is an ongoing journey of development, adaptability, and proactive learning. With the right mindset and resources, Indian talent has the potential to not only participate in, but shape, the future of the global workforce.
