Every year, around 22 to 23 lakh students appear for the NEET UG exam, with only 12 to 13 lakh qualifying. Despite these numbers, only about one lakh candidates secure MBBS admissions. Shiga Gautami has defied the odds and set an inspiring example by earning an MBBS seat while working as a labourer. Hailing from Venpati village in Tungaturthi Mandal, Telangana, Gautami faced immense challenges after losing both her parents at a young age.
Early Life
Gautami’s father passed away when she was just three years old, and she was raised by her grandparents who supported her education. She attended the local village school for her primary education and excelled academically. Gautami achieved a perfect GPA of 10 in her 10th-grade board exams and scored an impressive 992 out of 1000 in her Intermediate exams.
From a young age, Gautami aspired to become an MBBS physician. Her grandparents, however, encouraged her to complete graduation because of the dire financial situation. However, Gautami was determined to achieve her dream no matter what. She put in a lot of effort at work. However, she was accepted into a dental college on her first try because of her low NEET UG rank. BDS didn’t interest her. She therefore decided to retake the NEET exam.
In an interview with News18, Shiga Gautami claimed that the house’s financial situation was not good. There was not enough money to cover the NEET test tuition costs. In this case, her grandmother sent her back to Hyderabad for coaching after taking out a bank loan for her valuables. She received a 3000 rank in NEET UG this time. This time, Gautami was accepted to Manchiryala Government Medical College’s MBBS program.
According to Shiga Gautami, she was accepted into a government college for MBBS, but she had to labour to cover other costs, including the hostel. She must pay up to Rs 1.50 lakh in annual fees for the MBBS program, in addition to other costs including hostel fees. This cost was beyond the means of her grandparents. Shiga Gautami thus performed manual labour. While she was working, someone snapped her picture, which went viral after being shared on social media.
If benefactors step forward and assist Gautami in finishing her medical school, her grandparents are optimistic. Tejas Nandlal Pawar, the Suryapet Collector, promised that the mess costs would not be a hardship in light of this. Financial support was also given by Tungaturthi CI D. Srinivas Naik. Financial support has also been pledged by a few other donors. Gautami claimed that her opportunity to pursue an MBBS degree was made possible by their assistance. Gautami said to “Local18″ that she would always be grateful to them and that she would open a hospital and offer free medical care after she finished her MBBS.
