Books are one of the top forms of escapism for people in the UK, as per a new survey. It also revealed that more people prefer books over streaming platforms and cinemas!
The survey was conducted by Publishers Association (PA), who questioned 2,271 people over 18 years in the UK over during May 26 to 28, 2023.
While 54% of people turn to TV, as much as 33% of people choose books for escapism, reported The Bookseller.Other forms of escapism following books were: streaming platforms (32%), social media (27%), radio (24%), visiting pubs (21%), visiting movie halls (16%), and hearing podcasts (14%), as per the report.
The poll also asked people about what they did with their reading material after they were done with it. Many people revealed that they retained, reused/ donated or recycled their books. While a majority of people kept their books (41%), some of them passed it on to others (34%), donated them (33%), sold them online (12%), or threw them (7%).
Commenting on the outcome of the survey, Dan Conway, CEO at PA, said that the polling “shows the importance of books to peoples’ mental health and well-being”. It is also “a testament to their longevity and value,” he added.
“Books are a great way for us all to escape from our everyday routines, and if we are able to share that with our friends, families, and more widely, we could be making a huge difference to people’s lives without even realising it,” he said.
