Nominees Selected for the HigherEdMilitary Spotlight

HigherEdMilitary is excited to announce the launch of the HigherEdMilitary Spotlight Award. The award highlights those working in higher education who are exceptional at finding innovative ways to change, grow, and support the military-affiliated population on campus.

The nominees and winner are selected by the HigherEdMilitary Advisory Council. A donation is made on behalf of the winner to the campus club, department, or office of their choosing.

Please join us in recognizing the innovative and inspiring professionals who are leading the way in higher education and supporting military-affiliated students. The following are this year’s HigherEdMilitary Spotlight nominees. Stay tuned for the winner to be announced in June.

2023 HigherEdMilitary Spotlight Nominees

“Jan has been both an advocate and champion for the military-affiliated students both on the front lines and behind the scenes. She is very polished, tactful, energetic, and open-minded. The impacts of her ambitious agenda and incremental improvements will be felt throughout higher education and more directly to student veterans and their families for decades.”

“R.J. is well-known in the field of veteran services in higher education. He has spent many years working to make higher education more accessible and inclusive for student veterans. R.J. is an advocate for military-connected students and their success, with a passion for first-generation student veterans. R.J. contributes to our field significantly through his research and presentations at national conferences.”

“From yearly events and engagement, Kandi and 50 Strong really have a strong connection to employers and higher education institutes trying to bridge that gap between the two.”

“Beth Morgan is a long-time supporter of student veterans and military-connected students. She has worked in higher education for over 30 years and has been supporting the military community since 2010 in various roles, making her one of the “originals” in our field. Beth has served as a mentor to more individuals than I’m sure she is aware of, providing a sincere and kind rapport with everyone she meets.”

“Claudia, with her work in the Chancellor’s Office at Vanderbilt University, has developed a really great DOD recognized SkillBridge Program. Having the right mindset and initiative to move forward with this idea takes a ton of hard work and character. It is not easy to develop a program like this without having to deal with barriers and challenges but Claudia has come through and the program is off the ground now.”

“He has been a champion behind the articulation agreements and developing standardized practice for accepting JST credits with the California Community College, University of California and California State system. He also developed the Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) program at Saddleback College, one of the leading California CCs in veteran enrollment and support.”
