Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo clarified that he felt ‘no disrespect’ from Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund, who imitated his celebration after scoring against him in the UEFA Nations League playoff, but rather stated that he was looking forward to paying it forward to the Dane.
Denmark started to fear their dominance in the first-leg encounter against Portugal would not translate into a lead. However Hojlund, as a substitute, had other ideas.
The striker, who ended a long Manchester United drought last weekend by scoring in his team’s win at Leicester City, broke the deadlock by slotting home to cap a fine move.
Eriksen spread the ball to another substitute, Andreas Skov Olsen, who picked out Hojlund with a low ball to finish coolly in the 78th minute, helping Denmark ultimately secure the narrow 1-0 win.
The forward imitated Ronaldo’s jumping “Siuuu” celebration, sparking much conversation about whether it was meant as a diss towards the Portuguese superstar.
But, Ronaldo had no bad blood with Hojlund for his celebration, clarifying the same in the pre-match conference ahead of the second leg of the UEFA Nations League playoff against Denmark.
“For me? No problem. There’s no problem with what he (Hojlund) did,” Ronaldo stated in the presser.
“I know that he did not do it to disrespect me. I am smart enough to know that many others, including him, do my celebration.
“For me, it’s an honour. But tomorrow, I hope that he gets to see me do it,” the Portuguese remarked.
Hojlund himself also cleared the air about his celebration after the first leg, stating that it was a tribute to the former Man United and Real Madrid superstar.
“I’m playing against the world’s best footballer, my idol, and to score and become the (match) winner, it couldn’t be better,” Hojlund told Denmark’s TV2.
“It was not to mock him or anything, I’ve always said he has had great importance for me and my football career.”
