The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday (April 3, 2025) issued a notice to the Assam government over the detention of a journalist covering a protest over alleged financial irregularities in a bank in Guwahati.
According to reports, the journalist, employed with a digital news portal, was detained after he went to cover a protest happening in front of the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd.

The protestors were demanding a high-level inquiry into alleged financial irregularities in the management of the bank and strict action against those responsible for it. To follow up on the allegations of the protestors, the journalist allegedly questioned the Managing Director of the bank.
The reports suggested that no reason was cited for his detention.
Observing that the detention raises the issue of violation of the journalist’s human rights, it issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Government of Assam, calling for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.
