Speculations are rife over the name of the next Chief Minister of Manipur after N Biren Singh’s sudden and unexpected resignation on Sunday. Since then, the questions regarding who will succeed him as the next Chief Minister of the violence-hit state?
While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to make an official statement, names of potential candidates for the top post in the northeastern state are being discussed in the media circle. Reportedly, the name for the next Manipur CM might be announced today, sources informed.
Amid ongoing speculation over the BJP’s choice for replacing Biren Singh, these five names are speculated to be the top contenders for the post of Manipur Chief Minister. These individuals were reportedly present during a private meeting with the state’s party in-charge, Sambit Patra, according to sources.
Frontrunners For Manipur Chief Minister
Thokchom Satyabrata Singh
Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, elected in the Manipur Legislative Assembly election in 2017 and 2022 from Yaiskul constituency, is currently serving as Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Basanta Kumar Singh
Singh, Minister of Education in the 2nd Biren Singh Ministry, is a four-time MLA from Nambol Assembly constituency in Bishnupur District of Manipur, won the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election on BJP ticket.
Radheshyam Singh
BJP leader Radheshyam Singh was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from Heirok in the 2017 Manipur Legislative Assembly. He was the Minister of Education, Labor & Employment in N Biren Singh’s cabinet. He was then re-elected in 2022 and became the Advisor to the Chief Minister of Manipur.
Notably, Radheshyam is also a retired IPS officer from Manipur. He had received the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2006.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh
Served as the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly from 2017 to 2022, Yumnam Singh is a Cabinet Minister for Municipal Administration Housing Development (MAHUD) and the Education Department in the second Biren Singh ministry.
Biswajit Singh
Originally elected as a Trinamool Congress candidate in 2012, Biswajit Singh resigned in 2015 and contested the by-election as a BJP candidate and won the election. Biswajit Singh is Minister For Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Power, Agriculture, Science & Technology.
Biren Singh Resigned
Speculations over these five names emerged these candidates were seen attending a closed-door meeting with BJP’s North East Coordinator Sambit Patra and key political figures in Manipur. The saffron camp is looking for a candidate which is who can unify all communities amid the ongoing crisis in the state.
Meanwhile, Sambit Patra reportedly did rounds of meetings the entire day and is set to meet the BJP delegation, which might then leave for Raj Bhawan.
Biren Singh’s resignation came a day after the Manipur Congress announced that it would move a no-confidence motion against his government on February 10.
