NCP leaders protest water shortage, waste crisis in city

Nagpur: As the city grapples with soaring temperatures exceeding 44°C, frustration over the ongoing water crisis reached its peak on Wednesday. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders, led by city president Duneshwar Pethe met municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari. A large group of NCP members joined the protest, demanding immediate action and accountability from city authorities.
“For the past 15 years, residents heard repeated promises about the implementation of a 24×7 water supply scheme. However, many areas still face severe shortage. Water flows from taps for less than two hours a day in some zones. Even in settlements with water tanks, the supply is inadequate. Areas without direct water channels are the worst affected, with residents enduring daily hardships due to the unavailability of water,” said Pethe.
The NCP leaders expressed anger over the lack of progress and voiced their concerns directly to the municipal commissioner, warning that a large-scale agitation would follow if the issue was not resolved promptly.
In addition to the water crisis, the city is also dealing with a major fire at the Bhandewadi garbage dump, which reportedly ignited due to the extreme heat. Smoke continues to rise from the area, raising serious health and air quality concerns for nearby residents. Pethe called for a permanent solution to the waste disposal issue, urging the administration to take decisive action.
Chaudhari assured that the waste would be cleared soon, acknowledging the urgent need for action. However, with temperatures continuing to rise and water shortages worsening, residents and political leaders alike are calling for immediate solutions to prevent further distress.
