Paris Olympics: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu (PTI)
Mirabai Chanu Profile Weightlifting Paris Olympics 2024 Women’s 49kg
Mirabai Chanu clinched India’s first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as she created history by bagging silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. She thus became the second-ever Indian female weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. Chanu got silver with a total of 202 kg – 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk to follow Malleswari’s bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The now 29-year-old travels to Paris with hopes of winning Gold.
Just last year, Mirabai, who hails from Manipur’s Imphal, had injured herself at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. She suffered hip tendonitis and was out of action for a while.
She could only manage upper-body exercises in the immediate aftermath and relied on her mother, who travelled to Patiala, for emotional support.
After a six-month injury layoff when she took part in the IWF World Cup, she heaved her lowest weight in years with a total effort of 184kg (81kg+103kg), finishing 12th and 33kg behind China’s Hou Zhihui, who will look to defend her Olympic title.
She did confirm her Paris Games berth and that too on the back of just one month’s training after enduring a challenging injury breakdown.
