MG Cyberster India launch, MG Select models, PHEVS and hybrids, entry-luxury cars

JSW MG Motor India recently announced an all-new retail channel called MG Select that will be dedicated for more premium offerings from the brand. Although the company hasn’t shared any details about which models could be retailed from the MG Select channel, in a recent interaction with Autocar India, Gaurav Gupta, chief growth officer, MG Motor India, said, “Our plan is to get going by Q1 2025. So, within about six months from now, we are going to be in the market with our first product as well as our facilities.”

  1. MG Cyberster likely to be one of the models under MG Select
  2. Four new products lined up in the next two years

MG Select retail channel: what to expect?

The MG Select channel will be specifically dedicated to what MG calls NEVs (New energy vehicles), referring to hybrids, PHEVs and EVs. The company has confirmed that it will be bringing four new products for the Select channel in the next two years which will be locally assembled here.

MG will be starting with 12 Select experience centres across the country in the first phase, and more will be added in a phased manner, eventually also reaching out to Tier 2 cities.

Speaking specifically about the positioning of these models, Gupta said, “The Select channel will be distinct from the existing MG Channel, which will continue as the mainstream brand. The Select channel will offer entry-luxury models, and will be a standalone facility with workshops. There will be no overlapping between the two channels.”

Gupta further elaborated saying, “To begin with, we are looking at products that will help us put a stick in the ground in the entry-luxury space. We feel there’s a lot of opportunity there to something fresh to the customer, and we will be having a good mix of product, pricing and experience.”

MG Cyberster expected to be on the cards

As for the products, MG had showcased the Cyberster in India earlier this year, which is one of the likely candidates under the Select Channel. When pressed specifically on it, Gupta said, “It is definitely one of the products that we are shortlisted from our portfolio.”

The Cyberster is MG’s first-ever electric sportscar that’s already on sale in international markets, and is offered two battery pack and motor options. The entry-level model is powered by a single rear axle-mounted 308hp motor, gets a 64kWh battery and a claimed range of 520km. The range-topping Cyberster has a 77kWh battery pack, which has a CLTC-rated range of 580km, with two motors making a combined 544hp and 725Nm.

If MG decides to launch the Cyberster in India, the likes of the BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 could be among its chief rivals.
