The Collector of Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu has issued an order declaring a local holiday on March 12, 2025, due to the Masi Magam festival.
The Masi Magam festival, also known as Maasi Makam, is a significant event celebrated by Tamil Hindus over 10 days in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district. In 2025, Masi Magam falls on Wednesday, March 12. The festival involves processions of temple deities to water bodies for ceremonial baths, attracting thousands of devotees.
Significance
On the 12th day of Masi (Tamil month), the Masi Magam festival takes place, during which the sacred temple icons, known as Utsava Murthis, are ceremoniously carried to nearby rivers, ponds, or the sea for a ritual cleansing. This revered tradition attracts throngs of devotees who come to witness and participate in the sacred bathing. It is believed that immersing oneself in the water during this time washes away sins and bestows spiritual merit.
The festival takes place across 12 Shaiva temples and five Vaishnava temples.
In light of this, Thanjavur District Collector B Priyanka Pankajam has announced that government offices and educational institutions in the district will remain closed on March 12, 2025.
To compensate for this holiday, Saturday, March 29, 2025, will be a working day.
