Combined sales figures of the Nexon, Brezza and Fronx (45,129 units) make up 30.31 percent of the total of the top 10 bestselling models (1,48,882 units). The Nexon and Brezza make regular appearances in the top 10 list, leading the charge for compact SUVs, but it’s the Fronx that has managed a rather phenomenal year-on-year (YoY) growth of 51 percent – up to 14,882 units from 9,867 units a year ago.

The Fronx is now outselling even some other popular compact SUVs like the Hyundai Venue (9,754 units), Kia Sonet (6,433 units), and the Mahindra XUV 3XO (7,656 units) by a fair margin. In fact, it recently crossed the 2-lakh unit sales milestone in a period of 17 months since its launch and is the second bestselling Nexa model after the Baleno. It has been a key driver in Maruti’s performance in the utility vehicle segment.

UVs continue to boom while hatchbacks decline

The numbers also reveal that every utility vehicle (SUV or MPV) has seen a reasonable YoY growth. The Creta, which was updated with a mid-lifecycle facelift this year, particularly stands out with 31 percent growth. Still, even models like the Ertiga and the Scorpio, which have been in the market for a few years, continue to see growing demand.

Meanwhile, hatchbacks are witnessing a sharp decline in sales, especially at the more affordable end. Despite a generation update, Swift’s sales have fallen by 4 percent, and the Wagon R, which has been India’s bestselling car for three years in a row (FY2022, FY2023 and FY2024), sees a sharp 16 percent decline.
