Nagpur: The Maharashtra cabinet on Monday approved ₹747 crore to renovate and upgrade the divisional sports complex in Mankapur on the lines of Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi in Pune.
State sports and youth welfare minister Sanjay Bansode said the city’s premier sports facility would be revamped to provide state-of-the-art international-level facilities to sportspersons in Vidarbha.
After upgradation, the sprawling Mankapur facility would have world-class facilities like Olympic-size swimming pool, squash court, tennis court, basketball court, archery range, hockey, and football pavilion among others. It would provide a lot of opportunities to the region’s sportspersons and coaches, Bansode said.
The revamped facility would have accommodation for 1,200 players, parking facility for 700 vehicles and solar power system. It would also have facilities for kabaddi, kho-Kho, volleyball, wrestling, shooting, fencing, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, table tennis, basketball, softball, handball, cricket, and other sports.
The move came after deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis instructed the sports and youth welfare department in this regard. Accordingly, a proposal was submitted to the state cabinet.
