Mango peda or Aam peda is a delicious and traditional Indian sweet recipe that is perfect for special occasions or an after meal dessert. The recipe is prepared using fresh mangoes, milk powder, and ghee. It is an instant version which can be prepared in less than 20 minutes. I have shared few versions of peda recipe before, but my all time favourite is this milk peda made using real milk. But this one has become my latest favourite, it can be made in few mins, but the taste is so delicious, just like real ones.

About Mango Peda

Peda is a traditional Indian dessert recipe that is prepared using milk, sugar and ghee. It is a versatile recipe. It is often flavoured with any fruits, and spices like cardamom, saffron are used. One of my most favourite is milk peda ( doodh peda ) which is prepared using full fat cream milk and sugar. 

Why do people love this recipe Peda is a nostalgic Indian dessert. Milk peda ( doodh peda ) is my family’s most favourite sweet. But making traditional doodh peda is so time consuming. Whenever I crave for something milk sweets, then I will immediately make this instant version using milk powder.

It tastes so rich and creamy. I still remember during my childhood, When I go to a nearby petti ( small ) shop on my street there was a glass jar full of milk peda ( doodh peda ). I give 5 rupees to the vendor and open the jar by myself and take the doodh peda, then leave home. Those were the sweet moments of my childhood days.

Peda is a staple Indian dessert for any special occasion or celebrations. As the tamil new year / vishu ( Kerala new year ) are approaching, try this instant mango peda for your celebration at home. Why does this recipe work?

Mango peda ( Aam peda ) is a super popular, rich and lip smacking Indian dessert made with mango puree, milk powder and condensed milk. It is an instant version of peda using mangoes.

Texture : Mango peda is so soft and chewy milk fudge using mangoes and milk powder.

Easy to make : Mango peda is relatively easy to make and requires only minimal ingredients. Use of milk powder reduces the cooking time. It hardly requires 20 minutes to make.

Versatile : Pedas can be made in various flavours and textures, making it a versatile Indian dessert. It is perfect for any special occasion or even if any guest arrives at home, you can quickly prepare this instant peda.

Ingredients

Ripe mangoes : Different types of mangoes are available in the market like alphonso, kesar, banganpalli etc. You can use any ripe mangoes for best taste and texture.

Ghee : Ghee is used to bind and enhance the flavour.

Nuts / Edible silver leaf : Chopped nuts like badam ( almond ), cashew nut are used for garnishing the peda. You can even top it off with edible silver leaf ( but it is purely optional ).

Sweetened condensed milk : Condensed milk is used to enhance the richness of the sweet.

Milk powder : I have used sugar free milk powder for this recipe.

Yellow food color : Yellow food color is optional, but if added it gives a nice and rich color to the peda.

Mango Peda (Step by Step Pictures)

1)Take mango puree in a pan

2)Add in sweetened condensed milk

3)Mix well

4)Add in food colour

5)Mix well

6)Cook till it thickens and the moisture dries up

7)Now it has got little thick

8)Add in milk powder

9)Mix well

10)Cook till it leaves the sides of the pan

11)Add in ghee

12)Mix well

13)Remove it to a bowl and let it cool a bit

14)Take a small portion

15)Roll it into a ball

16)Flatten it and set aside

17)You can leave it just like that, i placed some silver paper on top

Follow these simple tips and tricks for a instant creamy mango peda :

  • Always use a non-stick pan to avoid sticking and burning.
  • After adding milk powder, mix well without any lumps.
  • Grease the hand with ghee before rolling the pedas.
  • If the mixture is dry and cracks in the end, add some condensed milk for a smooth texture.
  • To the peda dough, add flavouring agents like saffron, cardamom, nuts to enhance the taste.
  • Make a small ball of peda and have a dent in the middle for garnishing with nuts, saffron , tutti fruity or edible silver leaf.

Storage and serving

Instant mango peda tastes best at room temperature for 1 day. It can be stored in an airtight container inside the refrigerator for 5 days. Refrigerated pedas will be hard. So make sure to serve it warm, by heating them in the microwave for about 20 seconds.

FAQ

1.Can I used canned mango pulp?

Yes, you can use canned mango pulp for peda. Using fresh, ripe mangoes gives an authentic taste and flavour.

2.What if I don’t have milk powder ?

You can use full fat dairy milk for preparing pedas, which is a traditional way. But it is time consuming. Or you can also use unsweetened khoya ( mawa ).

3.Can I make it as a vegan peda?

Yes, you can make vegan peda if you are on a vegan diet. The list of ingredients may differ like using cashew powder, tofu ,dates paste or powder and desiccated powder. The use of these ingredients yields a vegan peda.

4.Can I use khoya ( mawa )?

Yes, you can use sweetened or unsweetened khoya ( mawa ) for a rich and creamy peda. Try to adjust the sugar accordingly for sweetness.

Variations

Doodh peda : Doodh peda / milk peda is a traditional Indian sweet recipe. It is prepared by simmering the full fat milk and it is a time consuming process. But it tastes heavenly and worth a try.

Chocolate peda : To make a chocolate peda, add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and some melted chocolates. Kids will surely love this Indian chocolate dessert.

Microwave instant peda : Take a bowl, mix all the ingredients together. Cook them for 3 minutes with an interval of 10 seconds. At each interval, take the bowl out and give a stir.

Mathura peda : Mathura peda is a traditional North Indian sweet. This peda is prepared by simmering and cooking the milk / khoya till golden brown. And then sugar, cardamom, and saffron are added.

Makhan peda : Makhan peda is so popular in Arcot, a town in Tamilnadu. This recipe is similar to gulab jamun. Rolled peda is stuffed with dry fruits and nuts, then deep fried in oil / ghee and soaked in sugar syrup.
