The Global Pik Up has been built keeping the ASEAN region, Australia, and South and Central Americas in mind.

Mahindra, as part of its global strategy, is exploring the possibility of introducing EVs in the UK and other European markets in the coming years. The homegrown SUV brand, which is also the country’s largest pickup truck manufacturer, recently unveiled its Global Pik Up concept based on the Scorpio N. Alongside the pickup truck, Mahindra also showcased the Thar electric concept.

The new global vision was shared by Veejay Nakra, president of automotive division at Mahindra, at Cape Town in South Africa. “It is a 2 million-unit global pickup truck market addressing the multiple needs of commute, lifestyle and off-roading with this new midsize global pickup truck,” Nakra says.

He added that the company is planning to introduce the pickup truck in the ASEAN region, Australia, India, South Africa, and South and Central America in the coming years.

R Velusamy president, Automotive Technology & Product Development and the chief of Global Product Development at Mahindra says, “The Global Pik Up has been developed on the new generation of ladder-frame chassis with a body that’s made of 80 percent high strength steel to meet all the global safety standards.”

The pickup truck will be powered by Gen-2 mHawk diesel engines with 4×4 capability and drive modes. Announcing the new refresh strategy at the FY23 annual earnings conference, Anish Shah, MD of Mahindra had shared that even as the company looks to consolidate its leadership in SUVs, it is planning to aggressively pursue global expansion. The company has set its sight on growing its global automotive revenue by 2.5 times, Shah announced.

Mahindra also revealed that the Global Pik Up will be packed with features and technology, and it spoke of a few like ADAS capability, semi-automatic parking and 5G-based connectivity features. And as is the hot favourite in India, this pickup will have a sunroof.

Mahindra Thar e concept details

Mahindra also showcased the Thar.e concept – the electric iteration of the Thar – in South Africa. The concept looks nothing like its ICE version and will be based on a modified version of the carmaker’s INGLO platform. While initial models like the XUV.e8 will use BYD and Valeo batteries and motors, respectively, (read more here) the Thar.e is likely to use the more powerful motors sourced from Volkswagen. Mahindra also revealed details about the launch timelines of its upcoming electric SUVs, with the XUV.e8 being the first to hit the market in December 2024.
