President of the 87th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana and writer Go. Ru. Channabasappa was on Thursday accorded a traditional welcome upon his arrival in Mandya to preside over the literary event that will begin on Friday.
Mr. Channabasappa was given a ‘purnakumbha’ welcome when he arrived at the venue of the sammelana on Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway in Mandya.
He was received on behalf of the district administration and the Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Dollu Kunita,Puja Kunita and folk troupes performed when the dignitaries welcomed the sammelana president.
Minister in charge of Mandya district, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, who is also president of the sammelana reception committee, welcomed Mr. Channabasappa with a ‘Mysuru Mallige’ garland, Kannada shawl, and a bouquet.
Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi also presented a bouquet to Mr. Channaasappa.
Ravikumar P., Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda, and P.M. Narendra Swamy, MLAs, Dinesh Gooli Gowda, MLC, Deputy Commissioner Kumara, ZP CEO Sheikh Tanveer Asif, Kannada Sahitya Parishat Mandya district unit president Meera Shivalingaiah were present.
Festive ambience
Mandya has decked up to greet the literary enthusiasts. The city has been lit up brightly and roads leading to the venue have been decorated to create a festive ambience.
According to the organisers, the Kannada flag will fly high on the houses in the city to celebrate the occasion. The flags will be hoisted on nearly 25,000 houses on Friday. Yellow and red coloured buntings can be seen across the city along with portraits of eminent Kannada writers and Jnanpith award winners.
The Kannada flag hoisting will take place between 6 a.m. and 6.30 a.m.
Grand procession
The grand procession of the sammelana president will be flagged off near Sir M. Visvesvaraya statue and conclude at the event venue. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar of the erstwhile Mysore royal family will flag off the procession.
At 10 a.m., Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the sammelana at the main venue. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, and Jnanpith award winner Chandrashekar Kambar will be present.
This will be followed by the inauguration of different initiatives such as book exhibitions and so on. From 2.30 p.m. onwards, sessions will commence.
On the occasion of the sammelana and Suvarna Karnataka-50, achievers will be felicitated on Friday at 7.30 p.m.
