Is petha juice always safe for new moms?

Masaba Gupta, who gave birth to a baby girl in October 2024, regularly takes to social media to document her postpartum diet, fitness, and recovery process. In a recent story on the platform, the fashion designer shared a picture of a glass of fresh petha juice, captioning it “season has changed and petha juice is back.” But is it a safe addition to the postpartum diet?

To learn more, we reached out to Archana S, senior nutritionist, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, who told us that petha or ash gourd juice is generally safe to consume as part of a postpartum diet since it is nutrient-dense yet low in calories. “It is extremely hydrating and full of essential nutrients like vitamins B, C, calcium, iron, and antioxidants that enhance immunity and energy levels,” she said.

She added that the juice’s cooling effect helps improve digestion, and reduces acidity and constipation — two of the most prevalent postpartum issues.

According to the expert, petha juice also aids detoxification, supports a healthy gut, and can help maintain blood sugar levels. “Its anti-inflammatory quality can also be useful during the healing process and, therefore, can be a healthy component of a postpartum diet if taken in moderation,” she continued.

What is the best way to include it in diet?

Have it as fresh juice in the morning on an empty stomach, Archana suggested. “Mix in a little honey or lemon to taste. It can even be blended with smoothies or diluted if one feels the fresh taste is too strong,” said Archana, suggesting to start with small portions and observe the body’s response first before making it a regular part of one’s diet plan.

Precautions to keep in mind

Even though petha juice is nutritious and healthy, Archana emphasised on the importance of consuming it in small quantities because excessive consumption can cause bloating or stomach discomfort. “Always consume it fresh and never store it for a long time. For cold and respiratory ailments, consume it in small quantities because it has a cooling effect,” she stressed.

Also, she recommended consulting a nutritionist before adding it to your postpartum diet plan, especially if you have any health conditions or are on medication.
