Professor Amit Patra will be serving in this position until the regular incumbent assumes office or until further notice, whichever is earlier.
Amit Patra, director of IIT Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU) has taken the additional responsibility as the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur today, December 31, 2024. Patra will be serving in this position until the regular incumbent assumes office or until further notice, whichever is earlier. He is currently a professor in the Higher Academic Grade Pay.
Patra completed his BTech from IIT Kharagpur in 1984, followed by MTech in 1986, and PhD in 1990. He was also a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering since 1987 at the institute.
Between 2018 and 2019, Professor Patra was a Senior Visiting Research Scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has also been serving there as an Honorary Adjunct Professor.
He was also the Professor-In-Charge of the Advanced VLSI Design Lab at IIT Kharagpur from 2004 to 2007 wherein he helped expand the chip design activity of the laboratory as well as set up an advanced test facility. During his tenure, the laboratory received funding of about USD 1 Million from major multinational corporations like National Semiconductor, Intel, Synopsys, etc, according to the KGP Chronicle.
He was also a recipient of the Young Engineer Award of the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 1996. He also received the Young Teachers Career Award from the All India Council for Technical Education in 1995 as well as the Samsung Innovation Award in the same year.
At present, Prof. Patra’s research interests include power management circuits, mixed-signal VLSI design, battery management systems, diagnostics, and prognostics in industrial and biomedical systems.
