Harleen Sethi is currently gaining appreciation for her character of a doctor in JioCinema’s web show Doctors. She spoke about her role and her experience of shooting a rare medical show in Hindi in an interview with us.
Harleen Sethi on playing a doctor in Doctors, “The prep for the show was the most enjoyable process I’ve gone through”
What was your preparation for your role as a doctor in Doctors?
Prep level was actually the most fun part about this show for me personally. We had a medical consultant. His name is Dr. Agni. Once we signed the show and after our table readings, he would come in and he would teach us things like how to give CPR, and what different medical terms that are in the script mean.
You seem to have done your homework for the part
Not only with the medical details but also the way doctors talk: what’s the kind of rhythm that doctors talk in mostly, you know, when there’s emergency or there’s chaos, how do you hold a scalpel, how do you do suturing, suturing meaning like how do you stitch, you know, after you cut a wound or you cut, you know. So, we used to practice suturing on paper napkins, we used to practice it on banana peels, you know. All of us used to be together, the entire, all the residents and you know, everyone was training to be a doctor for the show. We would check each other’s pulse, we would check each other’s BP, how to do all of those things, how do you wash your hands before entering into the OT, how do you enter OT. You’re supposed to be sterile. So, just understanding all of these physical things, how they are done and then to get into the emotional state and to understand a little bit of the psychology of a doctor.
Did you do any reading on the subject?
I personally read this book called Complications by Atul Gawande and I understood a lot of things about young surgeons because that book is about a life of a young surgeon and the mistakes that the doctors make and how human they are and what kind of stress levels they’re going through, how they have to put their own personal lives on a back burner.
So, all in all it was just amazing, the prep for this because I got a window into the world of people we really look up to. Almost they’re superheroes of our society in a way. They just don’t wear capes and to get this kind of an insight into another professional’s world, there was so much learning about empathy, compassion, kindness, the kind of inner strength a doctor needs to have to see so many deaths regularly at such a regular basis in the hospital. Trying every single time with pure intention to save a life, still sometimes complications arise, mistakes happen, how they deal with that, how sometimes the families, friends, they blame them, how sometimes there’s violence on the doctors and the nurses. Oh, the prep to this was just the most enjoyable process that I’ve gone through.
