The Indian government is taking up a significant project to establish the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. The estimated cost of this venture is INR 4500 crore. The primary objective of the NMHC is to develop an international tourist destination that showcases India‘s rich maritime heritage.
Under the Sagarmala program, initiated by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, the NMHC aims to become a world-class facility. It will present India’s maritime heritage from ancient to modern times and raise awareness through an edutainment approach utilising cutting-edge technology. Construction on the complex commenced in March 2022.
The NMHC is envisioned to feature various attractions, including the world’s tallest lighthouse museum, the largest open aquatic gallery, and India’s greatest naval museum. It is expected to become one of the world’s largest international tourist destinations, said an official statement by the Shipping Ministry.
Furthermore, the development of the NMHC will not only promote tourism but also contribute to the economic growth of the region.Notable features of the NMHC will include a recreation of Harappan architecture and lifestyle in a miniature Lothal, four theme parks covering memorial, maritime and navy, climate, and adventure and amusement themes, as well as fourteen galleries showcasing India’s maritime heritage spanning from the Harappan era to the present.
Additionally, there will be a Coastal States Pavilion that exhibits the diverse maritime heritage of different states and Union Territories.
A project progress review meeting for the NMHC is scheduled to take place on July 2, 2023, at Lothal, Gujarat.
