On July 1, 2023, in accordance with the govt’s approach to transform India‘s iconic lighthouses into heritage tourism sites, the inauguration of tourism facilities at the historic cities of Dwarka, Gopnath, and Veraval in Gujarat was initiated.
This significant initiative aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage, significance, and allure of these magnificent structures, attracting tourists from around the world.
During the 75th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ the Prime Minister Modi emphasised the unique appeal of lighthouses and their potential as tourist attractions. He stated, “Lighthouses are unique when it comes to tourism. Due to their impressive size, lighthouses have always been a center of attraction for tourists. For boosting tourism, another 72 lighthouses have also been identified in India by DGLL.”
This occasion also marks a significant milestone in the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of these cities. The inauguration of world-class tourism facilities at these lighthouses combines historical charm with modern amenities, creating an unparalleled destination for tourists from all corners of the globe, as per an official ministry statement. Visitors to these tourism facilities will have the opportunity to delve into the rich history of the lighthouses through interactive exhibits, audiovisual presentations, and engaging guided tours.
Additionally, the facility will feature a panoramic observation deck, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the coastline.
