A government school educator from Rajasthan has been shortlisted for the USD 1 million GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize 2025. Mohammad Imran Khan Mewati has been shortlisted for transforming rural education with his innovative use of technology. A teacher at the Government Sanskrit Secondary School in Alwar, he is among the top 10 finalists who have been selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications from 89 countries around the world, reported PTI.

Mewati whose work has been recognised globally as well as by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been shortlisted for his work which extends beyond classrooms. He has also addressed infrastructure challenges across schools along with training thousands of teachers. Mewati who has been teaching since 1999 has developed over 100 educational apps which reach millions across 50 countries. He also created the ‘Devvani’ app for Sanskrit education and ‘PRASHAST’ for disability screening.

“My heartfelt thanks to the Varkey Foundation, GEMS Education, and UNESCO for recognising the invaluable role that teachers play in shaping society. Every teacher contributes to inspiring curiosity, nurturing creativity, and empowering students to achieve their fullest potential,” Mewati said further adding, “It is truly humbling to stand alongside such inspirational educators from around the world.”

Mewati’s dedication inspires communities and exemplifies transformative education, the Global Teacher Prize panel stated.

Congratulations to Mohammad, who is joining a global community of educators leading the way to build a better future,” Sunny Varkey, founder of the Global Teacher Prize and chairman of the UK-headquartered Varkey Foundation said.

In a time of global teacher shortages, challenging conditions and technological advances, recognising and investing in teachers is essential to building a just, inclusive, and sustainable future. Teachers matter as they shape not only the next generation but the future of our societies,” Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education said.
