To say that Manchester City have hit a rough patch would be an understatement. The defending Premier League champions are amid an unforeseen slump, having sustained five straight defeats making it boss Pep Guardiola’s worst-ever run in his entire managerial career.
But, none of it seems to have stopped Guardiola, who stated that if his players recovered and remained healthy, he would reclaim their lost dominance and show the world ‘the real Manchester City’.
Injury problems have beset the Mancunians since the start of the season, most notably the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri for the rest of the season.
A further blow was delivered this past weekend with news that midfielder Mateo Kovacic could be ruled out for up to a month with an undisclosed injury.
Ahead of City’s face-off against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League this week, Guardiola expounded on his team’s troubles and threw the gauntlet out.
“The squad is really good when we are all together. but unfortunately, now you have to face it,” Guardiola was quoted as saying to Ziggo.
“It’s difficult when you have to play without 4 central defenders, 2 holding midfielders, the best player in the world Rodri out, 3 wingers out, just give me my players back… you’ll see Man City”.
The Spainiard could use every last bit of help from his players as City are slated to take on table-toppers Liverpool at Anfield, where they haven’t in front of a crowd since 2003, later this weekend in the Premier League.

The one glimmer of hope for City may be the return of Kevin De Bruyne, who made an appearance as a late substitute this past weekend after a two-month injury absence. Yet, there exists a pressing need for Guardiola to figure out alternative solutions if the side hopes to turn their fortunes around.
