Former world champion boxer Saweety Boora has lodged an FIR against her Asiad bronze-winning kabaddi player husband Deepak Hooda in Haryana’s Hisar, alleging him of physically assaulting her for dowry.
The couple, both recipients of the Arjuna Award, have lodged police complaints against each other at the Hisar and Rohtak police stations.
While Saweety has alleged that Hooda physically assaulted her and demanded Rs 1 crore with an SUV as dowry from her family, Hooda, on the other hand, has accused Boora’s family of usurping his property and threatening him, as per a report by The Tribune.
“An FIR dated February 25 has been lodged based on the complaint given by Saweety Boora against her husband Deepak Hooda,” Seema, SHO of women police station, Hisar, stated on Thursday.
The SHO also revealed the reasons behind the charges being levied against Hooda, expounding that torture and assault “for more dowry” were among the charges levelled.
“A demand for a luxury car was made and met, but her husband beats her, also raises monetary demand,” the SHO replied.
A case has been registered under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to a husband or relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty.
Hooda has reportedly failed to present himself to the authorities.
“We gave him notice 2-3 times, but he did not turn up,” the SHO added.
It was also reported by PTI that Hooda justified his absence by citing that his health has “taken a beating due to the trauma.”
“I have submitted a medical certificate and requested a later date. I will certainly go there (to the police station), but I won’t make a negative comment against my wife. I have not been allowed to meet her,” Hooda stated to PTI.
Married on July 7, 2022, their relationship has since deteriorated, potentially leading to a separation.
Saweety, a gold medallist at the 2023 World Championships, was honored with the Arjuna Award in January 2025.
Hooda was a part of the Indian Kabaddi team, which won the gold medal at the South Asian Games in 2016 and the bronze at the 2014 Asian Games.
He then unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Haryana assembly polls as the BJP nominee from the Meham constituency in the Rohtak district.
