Chandrapur: A BAMCEF (All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation) worker created commotion by slamming an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to the ground at a polling booth in Bhadravati on Wednesday. Accused Lata Shingade, who had arrived to cast vote at a zilla parishad school (booth number 309) also shouted anti-EVM slogans and demanded elections be held via ballot papers.
Shingade, cast her vote and had her finger inked, before suddenly targeting the EVM. Eyewitnesses said she hurled EVM to the ground and loudly raised “Remove EVM, save Constitution”, causing panic at the booth.
Polling officials acted swiftly to detain Shingade and informed Bhadravati police. Inspector Amol Kachole and his team took her into custody for questioning.
The incident temporarily disrupted voting at the booth. However, polling resumed after officials brought the situation under control. The incident raised questions about security during polling and stirred fresh EVMs versus ballot paper debate.
