Erling Haaland was was persistently trolled throughout the match as Arsenal thrashed Manchester City 5-1 in the Premier League.
Erling Haaland’s father, Alfie, has aimed a brutal dig at Arsenal after Manchester City’s crushing defeat on Sunday. The Gunners ran riot at the Emirates Stadium on February 2, scoring five past the reigning Premier League winners. Manchester City’s goal machine Haaland was persistently trolled throughout the high-octane affair, prompting his father to come up with a witheringly scornful response on social media. Quoting one of Arsenal’s celebratory posts on X (formerly Twitter) after the game, Alfie wrote – “«This Team» that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not.” He concluded his jibe with a blue heart emoji to showcase his support for Manchester City.
Arsenal were spotless during their weekend Premier League game on home turf. With five different scorers on the board, they comfortably sailed past Manchester City to keep themselves alive in the title race. In the high-drama fixture, Erling Haaland also found himself on the receiving end of excessive trolling from multiple Arsenal stars. He was first targeted by Gabriel, who laughed in the Norwegian’s face after Martin Odegaard’s early opener in the match’s second minute. Youngster Lewis-Skelly followed up by copying Haaland’s celebration by sitting in a meditation pose after scoring his first senior goal in England’s top flight.
The drama wasn’t over even after the final whistle. At full-time, Kendrick Lamar’s famous music track ‘Humble’ was played over the speakers at the Emirates Stadium. It was a reference to Erling Haaland telling Mikel Arteta to ‘stay humble’ after Manchester City had played out a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in September last year.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta was quite happy with the result against Manchester City. “It is a great day for us. For the result, for the manner that we’ve done it, especially against the level of the opposition that we played today,” he said in the post-match press conference, as per Arsenal’s official website. “To beat them in the manner that we’ve done, a lot of things have to go your way. We were very aggressive, we played with a lot of courage with and without the ball, and with the high press, the limits are really, really thin,” Arteta added.
Manchester City’s defeat to Arsenal has now put them 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool FC in the 2024/25 title race. The Pep Guardiola-coached side will now hope to recover from damaging defeat quickly. They will be back in action next weekend against Leyton Orient in Round 4 of the FA Cup. The fixture will be hosted at Brisbane Road on February 8.
