Dubai‘s tourism sector is on a steady growth path, maintaining its momentum with a remarkable 11 per cent year-on-year increase in international visitors during the first quarter of 2024. The city welcomed 5.18 million international overnight visitors, showcasing its resilience and appeal as a leading global destination. This achievement follows a record-breaking year in 2023 when Dubai received 17.15 million international visitors, solidifying its position as a preferred choice for business and leisure travellers.
The impressive figures were shared by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) during the 31st edition of the Arabian Travel Market (ATM). Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, commended this milestone, stating that Dubai is poised for another exceptional year in tourism. He emphasized Dubai’s commitment to delivering exceptional experiences and highlighted the success of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) in positioning the city as a global leader.
Sheikh Hamdan lauded the efforts of DET in promoting Dubai globally and ensuring visitor satisfaction. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to enhance Dubai’s appeal and maintain its position on the global tourism map. He also reiterated Dubai’s dedication to exceeding visitor expectations and providing unparalleled experiences across various sectors.
The city’s success is attributed to strategic initiatives and investments, including sustainability programs, entrepreneurship support, and talent attraction. Dubai’s commitment to sustainability is evident through initiatives like the ‘Refill for Life’ campaign, reducing plastic waste, and the Dubai Reef project, aimed at boosting marine biodiversity. The Dubai College of Tourism (DCT) plays a crucial role in developing a skilled workforce, while Dubai SME supports emerging entrepreneurs.
The culinary scene in Dubai continues to flourish, with the city being recognized as a global culinary capital. Additionally, the cruise sector is witnessing significant growth, supported by partnerships and infrastructure enhancements under the Cruise Arabia alliance. Dubai’s status as a global entertainment hub is further bolstered by new attractions like Real Madrid World and a diverse calendar of events throughout the year.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), highlighted Dubai’s commitment to long-term goals and its positive impact on tourism and economic growth. He emphasised the city’s resilience and the collaborative efforts driving its success.Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), talked about the the importance of global campaigns and partnerships in promoting Dubai to a diverse audience worldwide. He acknowledged the role of stakeholders in delivering exceptional service and contributing to Dubai’s reputation as a top destination.
Dubai’s hotels also reported robust performance, with an average occupancy rate of 83 per cent in Q1 2024 and increased revenues across various segments. The city continues to attract visitors from key markets, showcasing its appeal as a global leisure and business hub.
The success of Dubai’s tourism sector in the first quarter of 2024 sets a strong foundation for continued growth and reinforces the city’s status as a premier destination offering world-class experiences.
