Deva has taken a low opening at the box office. The film was promoted well and after the teaser was out, it was expected to take at least a double digit opening. In fact, in days to follow, it had started seeming that the film may as well surprise and perhaps get into that Rs. 12-15 crores range as well. However, once the trailer was unveiled, it gave an impression of a much niche and darker cinema. Due to that, the expectations were kept in check.
There was further surprise in store though when the advance booking opened and since there wasn’t much movement there, the expectation was reset to Rs. 5-7 crores. The film has a strong Mumbai flavour to it and as a result at an all-India level, it all came down to word of mouth doing the trick. As a result, all eyes were on the best numbers that the Shahid Kapoor starrer would eventually manage as a major opening was ruled out.
That’s the reason why with Rs. 5.78 crores coming on the opening day, it’s now all boiling down to how audiences would be embracing it in next couple of days. The numbers are indeed low for the opening day and given the kind of work that Shahid has done in the film, one feels for him as the film should have opened better. Reports for the film are mixed as well which means it’s going to be a wait and watch scenario. Deva is a major film and hence at least 50% jump needs to come in today.
