Delhi Air Quality: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, on Monday, released a notification announcing the shift to online classes amid worsening air quality in the national capital and its adjoining areas. ‘To safeguard the health and well-being of students,’ JNU will conduct online classes until 22 November 2024. However, the schedule and mode of examination will remain unchanged.

“In view of the severe air pollution and hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in Delhi and NCR and in order to safeguard the health and well-being of students of the University, it has been decided by the University to hold classes in Online Mode till 22nd November 2024 (Friday). The schedule and mode of examinations, wherever applicable, will remain the same,” stated the official notification.

Meanwhile, the University of Delhi (DU) has also shifted its classes to online mode until 23 November 2024, terming the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi & NCR at an “alarmingly high index”. Physical mode classes will resume on 25 November 2024.

“The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi & NCR has deteriorated to an alarmingly high index. In the larger interest of students of the Colleges and the Departments of the University of Delhi, it has been decided that the classes shall be conducted in Online Mode till Saturday the 23rd November 2024. Regular classes in physical mode to resume from Monday the 25th November 2024. The schedule of Examinations and Interviews shall remain unchanged,” stated Delhi University.

Jamia Milia Islamia has also announced to conduct the classes in online mode till November 23. The university will resume physical classes on November 25. The exam and interview schedule will, however, remain unchanged.

Delhi Air Pollution : AQI Touches 500 Mark

The overall AQI remained in the ‘Severe Plus’ category as most of the air monitoring systems in the national capital and surrounding areas reached “alarmingly high” levels, touching the 500 mark. The Delhi government has termed the air situation a “medical emergency” and urged institutions to take preventive measures in the interest of public health.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, 401 and 500 ‘severe’ and above 500 ‘severe plus’.
