Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP said that there is a lack of awareness among tourists and the public about the Blue Flag beach at Tannirbhavi in the city. Chairing a meeting of the District Tourism Development Committee on Tuesday, the DC said that development of tourist destinations in the district should be expedited.
“Though Tannirbhavi has been accorded the Blue Flag beach tag, the number of visitors there is less due to a lack of awareness. Hence, attractive hoardings should be put up at the entrance of the beach and various other crowded places. Further, attractive posters with photos should be created with the help of web designers, and the same should be shared on social media and websites,” the DC said.
“The development of beaches will play a key role in the promotion of tourism in Mangaluru. Since several projects are under way through the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), beach tourism should be given more emphasis,” he said.
He also expressed displeasure over the slow pace of tourism development projects. “Several tourism projects taken up in the city have been moving at a sluggish pace. All types of tourism development works should be expedited, as the city has been witnessing the arrival of a large number of tourists. Further, after the Maldives-Lakshadweep tourism row, the name of beaches in Mangaluru are also being discussed. Hence, we need to give emphasis to complete all projects at the earliest, and thereby attract more tourists to the coast,” he added. Tourism department deputy director Manikya was present.
