Todd Boehly is once again making headlines as the Chelsea owner-backed Cain International have reportedly succeeded in securing a stake in Hundred side Trent Rockets on Tuesday.
Boehly has agreed to buy a 49% share in Hundred franchise Trent Rockets with Cain International, founded by the American and British businessman Jonathan Goldstein, set to pay just under £40m for the stake in the Rockets.
Nottinghamshire, hosts of the Rockets at their Trent Bridge ground, will retain control of the other 51%.
The two parties will now finalise their agreement over an eight-week period that begins at the conclusion of the Hundred sale.
Chelsea’s current struggles are bringing Boehly and fellow Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali back into the firing line in public. There seems to be an ongoing PR battle between them to not be seen as the reason for the club’s struggles despite the vast investment in players.
Boehly has recently been in the headlines for quite the damaging reasons as well personally, as it was revealed last week that he’s also an investor with Vivid Seats, a company which resells tickets to Premier League games to fans abroad.
Boehly’s retort to all his allegations seems to be spending more money elsewhere in order to distract everyone from the bad PR.
Apart from buying out Premier League club Chelsea for a whopping £4.25bn in May 2022, Boehly is also a minority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and has stakes in about a dozen other sports-related businesses through his conglomerate Eldridge Industries.
Boehly’s purchase marks the seventh team from the English league to go under the auction hammer successfully.
Some of the most notable sells in the aution include the Mumbai Indians purchasing a 49% stake in Oval Invincibles for £60m, and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka purchasing a 70% stake in Manchester Originals for £81m (Rs. 871 crore approx).
The Sun Group, which owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), also purchased a 100% stake in the Northern Superchargers for £100m (Rs. 1075 crore approx).
Southern Brave are the only team yet to be auctioned, with the process set to take place tonight, with Delhi Capitals co-owner GMR Group touted as favourites to win the bid.
