NAGPUR: An assistant postmaster of Wanadongri branch, Piyush Ingoley, tossed over 800 Aadhaar cards into Vena river, off a bridge near Amravati bypass last week. The postal department was tasked to deliver these documents. Sources said Ingoley has been suspended and would face a departmental inquiry.
The Hingna police, alerted by passers-by, rushed to Vena river and salvaged sacks full of Aadhar cards and floating documents. Police presence and sight of floating documents drew onlookers to the bridge. Police conducted a spot panchanama and seized Aadhaar cards and other documents.
Ingoley was posted at Wanadongri branch around a year ago. He was miffed to see piles of sacks containing undelivered Aadhaar cards. Sources said mounting work pressure and alleged dereliction of service by his predecessor left Ingoley miffed.
To vent his ire, Ingoley resorted to a bizarre move of disposing the undelivered cards.
‘Aadhaar cards could have been misused’
Piyush Ingoley stuffed around 800 Aadhaar cards in three sacks and hurled them down the bridge in Vena river. “Ingoley should have referred the matter of undelivered documents to seniors, instead of throwing them into a river,” said a police official who added that openly floating Aadhaar cards could have potentially been misused for various purposes.
Hingna police station senior inspector Jeetendra Bobde said he would write to the postal department asking them to file a complaint into the episode. “We will transfer the case to MIDC police station as Wanadongri branch office falls under their jurisdiction. Currently, the documents are with Hingna police,” he said.
An official of Hingna police station said the postal department has informed them about action taken against Ingoley. Some years ago, a large number of Aadhaar cards were found at a scrap dealer’s shop in Nagpur.
